Sign the Petition to Support the Dyslexia Task Force Act!

My Dyslexia Task Force Act, A.2185-B/S.441-C, passed the Assembly and Senate! 

The bill will establish a statewide task force to examine appropriate and effective evidence-based screening, intervention, and support for students with and at risk of dyslexia and dysgraphia. This is the result of years of work and advocacy and represents the first major piece of legislation focused on dyslexia screening, curriculum, and teacher training that has ever passed in New York, so let's make sure the Senate passes this bill!

This legislation will mandate the Commissioner of the State Education Department to create a task force of educators, doctors, researchers, parents and advocates to examine and recommend the appropriate and evidence based screening methods, curriculum changes and teacher training that should be implemented for all students in kindergarten through 5th grade with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

    My 10 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia. After 5 years of schooling, with all of my concerns raised to her teachers, I was brushed off. Told she would get it, things would click. They didn’t. And only now is she able to get the education she needs and deserves. Shame on the New York education system.

    As a parent of two kids who’ve been diagnosed with dyslexia this year, I am deeply grateful for Assemblymember Carroll’s efforts to have every child screened for dyslexia. It’s so crucial and our education system must change to meet the 20% of the population with language-based disabilities. Parents of means have so spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to remediate their kids and parents of little means are left with hardly any support.

    This is very important to my family. It’s ridiculous that we know what to do and that schools don’t do it because they don’t have to.

    It’s pretty shameful that a learning difference or disability is not dealt with in schools. Parents have to take children for evaluations sometimes costing thousands of dollars because it’s a learning issue. All children deserve a Free eduction. Until testing is done and proper programs are used not all children will be afforded that opportunity.

    I have 2 son’s with dyslexia. The system has not given them the help they need. This needs to change.

    We do a lot of student testing in schools. It would be great if one of them was actually useful.
