Sign the Petition to Support the Dyslexia Task Force Act!

My Dyslexia Task Force Act, A.2185-B/S.441-C, passed the Assembly and Senate! 

The bill will establish a statewide task force to examine appropriate and effective evidence-based screening, intervention, and support for students with and at risk of dyslexia and dysgraphia. This is the result of years of work and advocacy and represents the first major piece of legislation focused on dyslexia screening, curriculum, and teacher training that has ever passed in New York, so let's make sure the Senate passes this bill!

This legislation will mandate the Commissioner of the State Education Department to create a task force of educators, doctors, researchers, parents and advocates to examine and recommend the appropriate and evidence based screening methods, curriculum changes and teacher training that should be implemented for all students in kindergarten through 5th grade with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

    As a teacher, I think this would be incredibly helpful! When students come to my upper elementary school class, if I suspect dyslexia, I have to gently bring it up to the parents and hope that they choose to have a private evaluation. It would benefit every student to find out early on and get help from the beginning so they can have a positive school experience.

    My sons dyslexia was missed in kindergarten and he was said to be immature and not trying hard. He lost all of first grade while the school had him in RTI and by the time he was diagnosed he was depressed and sick physically. Hated school and books which he once loved. He was acting out and not cooperating. Once he started Orton Gillingham tutoring he became confident in himself again and within a month was the little boy we missed. Proper diagnosis and instruction is so critical. Teaching schools how to deal with dyslexia is so critical. He was labeled as lazy and punished for not remembering his sight words. Unacceptable behavior from professionals. It destroyed my son. I paid $2000 for private testing to finally find the cause of his struggle. Dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. Now my kindergarten son is facing this same broken path with early signs of dyslexia. It’s a shame and sickening. We have known since the 1930’s how to remediate dyslexia. It actually isn’t that confusing. Educate our teachers to educate our children!
