Sign the Petition to Support the Dyslexia Diagnosis Access Act!

Let Governor Hochul know you support the Dyslexia Diagnosis Access Act!

My bill, the Dyslexia Diagnosis Act (A.2898/S.5481) passed both houses this legislative session and now will go to the Governor for her signature.

The bill mandates that private health insurance policies pay for neuropsychological exams for the purpose of diagnosing dyslexia. It is the first of its kind in the nation! The cost of these exams (between $6,000 - $10,000) are one of the major barriers to children getting a positive identification of the nature of their learning disability and therefore the services they need.  By making such evaluations affordable, this legislation will change the lives of thousands of children and their families across New York State.

I fully support this petition. It is such a shame and unethical how the public schools do not properly screen and have limited to no multi-sensory teaching approaches for these children. I had two boys, attending PS41 in Manhattan who struggled from the very beginning. The focus was continually on their behavior as a result of not being able to read vs. helping us with what was the root cause all along. Financially, it has been extremely difficult to get them the proper support needed. We are blessed to be at the Gateway School. Both of my boys are progressing beautifully, are confident, and simple put; happy all around! It’s fascinating to see these completely deflated children now overjoyed with their individual passion to learn and succeed…. We are so excited to see all of their continued potential! There needs to be more advocating! I am happy to support this cause in any potential way. Jennifer Serrano

Our children deserve effective reading instruction as well as basic dyslexia screening so that no child falls behind. We know better – we must do better!

My son is an alumni of Windward (1997). Andrew started in the 4th grade and could not read for his grade. At the end of the first year, he was on grade level. Thank you Windward. It was amazing!

Signing for my daughter, who should be able to receive a public education, but can’t – b/c HSS is incriedbly bright but can’t read!
