Sign the Petition to Support the Dyslexia Diagnosis Access Act!

Let Governor Hochul know you support the Dyslexia Diagnosis Access Act!

My bill, the Dyslexia Diagnosis Act (A.2898/S.5481) passed both houses this legislative session and now will go to the Governor for her signature.

The bill mandates that private health insurance policies pay for neuropsychological exams for the purpose of diagnosing dyslexia. It is the first of its kind in the nation! The cost of these exams (between $6,000 - $10,000) are one of the major barriers to children getting a positive identification of the nature of their learning disability and therefore the services they need.  By making such evaluations affordable, this legislation will change the lives of thousands of children and their families across New York State.

My daughter is dyslexic. She is now 26 years old , when we drive past her elementary school she says this is where they tortured me. She was in 5th grade and still could not read. We had to send her out of the community to a school that could teach her how to read, as she was also so very fragile having failed, If not for the Windward intervention of Orten Gilligham phonics she would have never learned how to read. The school district knew in kindergarten she was dyslexic yet the invention she needed was not provided or available. Totally unnecessary to do to a human especially a child when we know the treatment.

My son could not read going into 4th grade. He had a terrible journey as he started his school years and lost all confidence. He spent most of his time in school in the nurses office. The educators I trusted to help him encouraged us to put him in a contained classroom with a specialized teacher where he would get the most help. He couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him being placed with other children with all levels of emotional and physical disabilities. I cry every time I think about it. I put him in a school for children with language based learning disabilities and we had him repeat the 3rd grade. He was reading in a few short months and is now 17 a Jr. in high school and on the honor roll. He is in sports and I watched him give an amazing speech the other evening to his peers and an audience of parents and siblings. He works extremely hard, but the confidence he started life with is back and he reverts back to strategies he learned in his private school to get him through his school work. The public school never used the word dsylexia and had no idea how to help him. If he remained there he would have been a lost broken child unable to read or write. There are so many children like him out there. Please recognize them early and give the teachers the tools and strategies to help them properly, they will be the leaders of tomorrow I promise you! They do not now have a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) they are entitled to.
